IP Waterproof Rating Classification for Speakers
Speaker Waterproof Rating Classification & Function Chart
Speakers, Bluetooth speakers, and outdoor audio products typically use the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system to specify their enclosure's protection against the intrusion of solid foreign objects/dust and moisture. Common markings include IPX4, IPX5, IP67, and IP68. The first digit represents dust protection, and the second digit represents water protection. If a specific rating has not been tested or specified, it is indicated by an "X."
-
Applicable standards, test methods, and labeling for IPX9 and IPX9K may vary depending on the standard version used. Before making product claims, verify the corresponding test specifications and laboratory reports.
Higher numbers in IP ratings do not automatically encompass or replace all lower-level tests. For example, IPX7 involves immersion testing, whereas IPX5/IPX6 involves water jet testing. If a product needs to claim resistance to both high-pressure streams and temporary immersion, it must undergo the corresponding tests and be labeled accordingly based on actual requirements.
Design & Sales Guidelines
-
Waterproof does not mean playable underwater. Even if a product complies with IPX7 or IPX8, performance depends on actual test conditions, sealing structure, whether the charging port cover is tightly closed, and user manual limitations. Some products' waterproof performance is valid only when port covers, rubber plugs, or protective caps are fully sealed.
-
Test water differs from real-world environments. Most standardized tests use fresh water. Seawater, chlorinated pool water, detergents, beverages, oil stains, and high-temperature water can accelerate material aging, cause corrosion, or reduce seal reliability.
-
Speaker drivers and the entire unit should be defined separately. The speaker driver itself can use waterproof diaphragms, corrosion-resistant terminals, sealed leads, and waterproof mesh fabric. However, whether the entire unit can claim an IP rating depends on overall test results covering cabinet seams, buttons, charging ports, passive radiators, microphone holes, screw holes, and assembly quality.
-
IPX4 to IPX5 are generally suitable for standard portable outdoor Bluetooth speakers. If the product is targeted at beaches, camping, swimming pools, or scenarios involving accidental submersion, IP67 represents a more market-recognized specification direction.
-
Avoid using absolute terms such as "100% waterproof" or "permanently waterproof" on external catalogs, packaging, and e-commerce copy. Instead, use verifiable statements such as "Complies with IPX__ waterproof rating under IEC 60529 / product specification test conditions." The IP Code is a rating system used to describe the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of water and solid foreign objects.
IP67 Dustproof and Waterproof Protection
This product features an IP67 dustproof and waterproof rating, preventing dust ingress and withstanding short-term accidental immersion in water. It is suitable for poolside, beach, camping, and general outdoor activities. Before contact with water, please ensure all port protection covers are completely closed. Waterproof performance is verified under specific laboratory test conditions and may decrease due to daily wear and tear, physical impacts, improper use, or product damage.
